Cleaning your essential oil diffuser ensures it retains optimum effectiveness, so you can enjoy moments of well-being for many years. It's even more important if you love to use it multiple times every day.

Whether you have a diffuser that uses water or not, you must take good care of it. We have all the hints and tips to ensure you are cleaning it properly and with the right tools.

When should I clean my essential oil diffuser?

An essential oil diffuser disseminates molecules or microdroplets of water and/or essential oils. Some residue can therefore accumulate in the device. The secret to ensure it operates optimally for longer is simple: clean it regularly. How regularly? Each time you change scent or once a week or as soon as you think it's necessary. You should do it more often if you use it intensively.

The cleaning method is slightly different depending on whether you have a cool mist diffuser or a dry ultrasonic one. Advice for each diffuser and each use can be found below. But don't worry; using and cleaning an essential oil diffuser is very easy. Please read the instructions for each Aromasound product carefully to make sure you use (and clean) it properly.

For cleaning and general use, we don't recommend placing your diffuser on a fragile surface, like wooden furniture or near a material that can be easily damaged. At the very least, consider protection against splashes.

Essential tips for cleaning your diffuser (water operated)

Has the scent run out? It's time to change the bottle, but before you do, it's best to do a quick clean. You can easily clean mains-powered or portable diffusers that operate with water, mist or ultrasound with a soft cloth. You don't need a special cleaning tool; a cloth (preferably a clean one) or an old cotton t-shirt will suffice.

To clean, start by emptying the essential oil or synergy and any water left in the reservoir.

Express clean

Wipe the connector (which looks like a round disk) with a soft cloth.

Gently rub the bottom of the reservoir to remove excess oil and/or water. It's as quick and easy as that!

Deep clean

Depending on the type of products or synergies used, a thin oily film can remain at the bottom of the reservoir. A quick wipe with a cloth is usually enough to remove it. If that isn't sufficient, dampen a cloth with white vinegar and wipe the bottom of the reservoir. Then rinse with clean water (with a cloth).

Essential tips for cleaning your diffuser (waterless)

Nebia, Nebiase and Lantao are dry ultrasonic diffusers. That means they are waterless and don't usually require the same maintenance. Before any type of cleaning, you must first turn off your device. Cleaning these devices only concerns the Nebia component, which is the diffuser.

Express clean

For a very quick clean before changing scents, simply wipe and remove any essential oil residue with a cotton bud. Remove the essential oil bottle to clean the diffuser plate (inside and outside).

If there is any remaining essential oil on the ultrasonic plate, you can use a cloth dampened with white vinegar or pour a few drops of alcohol on it. If you use alcohol, you can turn on the diffuser and leave to run for about one minute to evaporate the excess alcohol before putting the scent back in.

Deep clean

For a deeper clean, you can use alcohol directly in the bottle. Start by removing the diffusion wick and pour about 1ml of alcohol into an empty essential oil bottle. Put the wick back in and then the bottle, just like regular use. Turn the diffuser on and leave it running for a few minutes. The alcohol will give it a deep clean and remove all traces of previously used scent.

For dry or cool mist diffusers, a regular clean – quick or deep – is essential to keep them running optimally and to extend their lifespan.
